Savage Supers!

So it's been a while since I've posted. Been very busy although I'm still playing Savage Worlds quite a bit. Thanks to some games by Gordon Ford this summer and fall my love of Savage Supers has grown. I've been wanting to run some games lately using Marvel Supers and the Super Powers Companion. So I'll be putting some of my creations up here for consumption. Let me know what you think? I am using Therealtony's Savage write ups for inspiration.

Rippers 2021 Scene One

So I had the opportunity to go and play with Mark Margraf and a few other Savages at MarkCon 2011. I ran my future super's setting Rippers 2021 using the Supers Companion set in a world were vampires have come out of the coffin. Since they have been legalized the Rippers have had a much harder time slaying vampires and werewolves! Here are some photos of the game. I'm hoping to run one of these at Savage Saturday night at Origins this year.

Here are some photos from my Conan game at Con on the Cob 2010! I had six great players and a very good time. I used the Solomon Kane rules along with some Edges and Setting rules from Shaintar, Deadlands, some monsters from the Fantasy tool kit and a few of my own additions. Hope you like 'em!

Agents of Oblivion: Silent Night

So we gathered the Friday before GenCon for a quick game of Agents of Oblivion. The agents were to infiltrate the Nagasaki Research and Development building to find out what happened to one of their scientists. He was working on an Eyes Only project for Pandora as a double agent and they had to find him, his research and get out!

This was the roof. The agents had to use HA/LO gear (Hi Altitude, Low Opening) to parachute down to the roof of the 5 story building. There were several guards they had to dispatch.

Inside the research facility they find things are worse than they feared! What are all these containers and why are the shapes in the darkness not moving?

Because the shapes are zombies!!! And they are moving now!!!

All roads lead to doom...

They finally catch up to her and a bloody battle ensues...

Overall, a fun time. Although next time I will have equipment and pre-op gear/weapons already selected for the Agents. That took almost an hour of our time at the beginning.

Joe and Deb made a trip to Historicon to run a game for me and my friend Kevin. They brought two friends of their own to make our party complete! Joe ran us through a scenario from the original Cthulhu book but used the new Realms of Cthulhu from Reality Blurs available at GenCon this weekend!

We had a lot of fun getting into character. Joe had a lot of fun in the scene where our father died (messily) in his hospital bed while telling us of his dark secret!

Strangely we all lived and no one went insane. Well, except maybe Zane (Deb's dog)! :-)

Savage Historicon WW2!

So I promised some photos of the Savage Worlds gaming at Historicon. Wait no longer!!! (You've waited over a month already).

These photos are of Mike Sarno and Corey Weaver from the forums. They ran a World War 2 game with over 38 units! The idea was the Germans had to get a tank across a Russian held front. If they were successful they got to use it in the next scenario. They had four players and used Modern Ops and the Forward Observer rule from Fields of Honor as a homebrew for this game.

So I ran my Golden Age Heroes setting at Origins. Here are some photos. The game played fairly well... It's always difficult to run supers even with a rule set as quick and streamlined as Savage Worlds. Still, I thought the game turned out alright and everyone seemed to have fun.

These are from the second game... Ma's Money. It seems that one of Ma's hoodlums had buried her money in the train yard and booby trapped it so no trespassers would come a callin. However, he was captured by corrupt Feds and spilled the beans. The police got an annonymous tip that there was trouble in the old abandoned train yard and a three way battle ensued. Of course, the snitch couldn't remember exactly where he buried the $$$ so there were encounter markers on the board that Wild Cards could search and try to find the loot...

Gamer's Haven Memorial Day Pulp Game

It's been a while since I've updated! Memorial Day weekend was a great one for Savage Worlds games. We played two games at Gamer's Haven. The first game was a dino hunt Kevin ran using alternative rules. Hopefully I'll be convincing him to use the dinos from Sticks and Stones so we can play a Savage version of it. The second game was a Ravaged Earth shoot out featuring my recurring group of Ma's gang, her rival Jimmy Malone (police) and the FBI. We also played two Savage Worlds games later that night at my house (Deadlands & Heroic Adventures) but I didn't get any photos since Shellie took the camera with her to Kentucky that weekend!

Pulp City

So a friend of mine and I have been working on a generic pulp city to stand in for Ravaged Earth, Daring Tales, Hollow Earth ect... It's about half way done but we set up some of it last night and had a quick Showdown on it. We have about 10 more building fronts to finish, a bunch more cars and some detail pieces. But here is the first look! We actually played the game of cops/g-men vs. Ma and her gang (I played Ma & the gang and lost) then I set them up again and took some photos. Looking forward to the Savage Worlds Template Set so I can take photos during a game and have markers on the board for the pics!

Necessary Evil

We played our second game of Necessary Evil last night... We were two players short so I just rolled up a mission using the adventure generator, grabbed some terrain and figs and we went at it! Here are some photos.

The characters were tracked back to a warehouse where they were making a delivery to Dr. Destruction. Then SOCorp showed up and the party really started!

Savage Ninja Turtles

So we played my Savage Ninja Turtles game today with my son and Allen's boys and nephew. So we had the 4 Turtles and Al played Splinter. I ran three scenes in about 3 hours (with a 15 minute break for pizza about half way through). The kids played very well. We used the full Savage Rules and they had no problems with it. Here are a few photos of the game I took.

Scene one: Central Park, Skate boarding park
Kids were being bullied into joining a "gang". The gang was recruiting for the Foot clan!

Scene Two: A warehouse where street kids are being trained to be Foot Ninja. The Turtles shut it down!

Leo's in a bit of trouble below as 5 of the Foot clan surround him!

Scene three: An abandoned pump station where the evil Shredder is planning to dump toxic goo into the drinking water of New York City!

And the Turtles win the day! Derek had the winning shot on Shredder doing 40 points of damage to take him out Savage Style!! And a good time was had by all.

Raphael has some kind of minor insanity that makes him the "crazy" man of the group. He has problems being controlled and cannot even control himself. He doesn't like this side of himself, but he can't yet control it. His closest friend is Michaelangelo. It's Mikey's great love of life and fun that acts as a balance for Raphael's anger and depressions. As a fighter, Raph is neither the most skillful (Leonardo is better) or the most talented (Michaelangelo is phenomenal) but he is the most deadly Ninja Turtle becuase of his Berserking rage.

Shaintar: Invading Hordes!

So last night we played our continuing Shaintar game. The group had to rescue a maiden from a mercenary band of Maelstrom and then defeat a horde of goblinesh on the war path. They did both in record time! Here's a couple of photos from the start of the game. Of course, I forgot to take the aftermath photos... In the close up you can see the few villagers leaving as the heroes set up behind a barrier they made into the village.

Shaintar: Shivak-Novos, the Grey Lands

So in our climatic battle against Lord Moonshade he managed to kill his son Cerellean Moonshade (Troy's character) and trap his essence/life force inside the Mirror of Shame... The good guys escaped and decided to try and rescue their fallen brother from the Grey Lands where his life force was trapped. And so, I set up this little adventure in Shivak-Novos. I took the info from the Corelisia world book and used a McFarlan Dragon as the guardian of his life force. Sean has alluded to Dragons in a few places in the Shaintar info and so I thought it would be fun to use one as an NPC guardian. It was lots of fun! I used the stats from the Red Dragon in core book. Here are some photos!

Ravaged Earth

80's Cartoon side kicks (Bumble Bee)

So I ran the 80's Cartoon Extraganza at Origins and Con on the Cob this year. Both games went very well for me. The premise was that the heroes from famous 80's cartoons were kidnapped and the side kicks had to band together to rescue them. Since I might run this again I won't spoil the game with details but it mostly involved fighting bad guy cartoons and 80's trivia!

The characters were all Novice made with Necessary Evil powers. All the characters have AB: Super Powers and took Super Karma for the extra 5 PPs. A couple of them have 5 XP so I could give them an extra 5 Power Points. So I present them here for your (dis)approval in alphabetical order:

Well, it's certainly been a while since I posted here. That's mostly because no one was reading it... in fact, even my own players are too lazy to check here. So, if any of my players read this I will give you a green benny for our next game! Just don't tell any of the others so I can see who read this. :-)

Anywho, Savage gaming continues. We will be concluding our Savage Serenity: Season 2 campaign next month. We will then start Slipstream or a second Shaintar group.

We are also finishing up my Golden Age of Superheroes mini-campaign. Most of those players will end up in Slipstream or the 2nd Shaintar group as well.

We will start a Necropolis mini-campaign heading into winter and if we like it enough it will turn into a full blown campaign using the Plot Points.

And of course, I am still running Savage Worlds Showdowns occasionally (Star Wars most recently and Rippers next week). We are also playing Ravaged Earth at my local Game Store once a month.

The group continued on their journey from Tierny to Five Cross. They witnessed a collection of "road tax" from some of Lord Bigamere Bronn's men on the road. They stopped at Genevieve's Kitchen & Inn for some information and a meal but decided to stay the night. Two of the party members were awoke in the night as something was heard in the barn where they were sleeping. They followed the creature into the night but were unable to find it. It was apparently going through their saddle bags perhaps looking for something. In the morning they were unable to find any tracks since it had been raining all night...

Later that morning they met with a local huntsman who had killed two Ratzin and for two silver pieces agreed to take them to where he found them. After finding tracks and searching the wilderness the group came upon a small cave that some of them quickly entered... And found a group of Ratzin led by a rather large Minotaur. A fierce battle ensued!

After narrowly escaping death and defeating the small horde of Childer the group mourned their lost companions and searched the cave. There they found a few small purses of gold with the stamp of the Kingdom of Erimar and a letter signed by G. The group decided to press on to Five Cross and took the head of the Minotaur, the letter and gave the gold to the local peasants to help rebuild their farms and fields that had been burned.

Centenium Council

4-14-08 Our story begins with the meeting of the Five. Each of them has a part to play in the future of Shaintar and as they meet and discuss their plans they realize each of them has been marked with the White Hand. Each of them represents the fingers of a hand that when banded together makes a fist of great power. Each player gave a rousing speech at the Council and were rewarded with gifts and prophecies about the coming War of Flame.

The Speaker sang a song of prophecy and read an epic poem of Light & Life that strengthened the group and equipped them with knowledge of the creatures of Flame. Afterwards they met with Sgt. Guz who was heading back to Kythros. He recognized the twins from their earlier service in the Rangers and extended an invitation to the group to join the Grey Rangers. He also told them of trouble in Five Cross and asked them to investigate.

As the group headed to Five Cross they were attacked late one night by a group of wolves lead by a huge Werewolf. After a narrow victory and the loss of several horses they determined that tracks they found in the wilderness led away from the group and there were more creatures of Darkness following them... They were determined to get to Five Cross and find the owner of the tracks later.

New Campaign: Shaintar!

I am starting a new Savage Worlds campaign in the Shaintar setting. I have 5 players and each of them have gone through their "Intro" adventure which is a one on one game with the GM (me). It helps us establish their background and reason for getting involved in the storyline. It also gives the player a chance to get "into character" before the first session.

The year is 3120. Representatives from many lands of Shaintar have been gathering at Mindoth's Tower to meet with the druid's newly-formed Centenium Council. No longer a gathering of information, ideas and long range plans, it has become a war council. In less than 12 months the Gates of Hell are going to open again...

The Players:

Maylar Moonshade (Gary)
Eldark Sorcerer, member of the royal Eridor family through his mother (Noble) and older twin with Cerellean Moodshade. Maylar has always been the black sheep of the family and sought out power over peace. While he searches for his father's killer (Vow) he also seeks his own personal gain (Greed-Minor) and is rather vocal about his abilities (Arrogant). He and Cerellean have been sent to bring news of Eldara to the Centenium Council at Mindoth's Tower.

Cerellean Moonshade (Troy)
Eldakar druid, member of the royal Eridor family through his mother (Noble) and younger twin with Maylar Moonshade. Cerellean is the more thoughtful of the twins and has promoted peace through Life. He is always ready to help those in need (Heroic) , respects all Life (Code of Honor) and is fiercely protective of his friends and family (Loyal). He also searches for his father's killer to bring him to justice (Vow). He and Maylar have been sent to bring news of Eldara to the Centennial Council at Mindoth's Tower.

Ponzi Zzar Starpath (Brent)
Aevakar prince (Noble) and inheritor of his wife's enchanted Cavalier Armor. Ponzi is haunted by his past... A slave in the Kal-A-Nar Empire he was rescued by his wife only to see her captured by the slavers that kept him prisoner. Ponzi has promised to find his wife (Vow), reunite the scattered Aevakar under his banner (Vow) and will help all those less fortunate than himself (Heroic). He is heading to Mindoth's Tower to bring news of his scattered people and look for other Aevakar willing to take up the coming fight against the Queen of Flame.

Shiv Taank {Blackclaw} (Charlie)
A Brinchie born into slavery, Blackclaw escaped at a young age and wandered from town to town until he was found by a wandering Korindian master (Kor In Student). The master began teaching Blackclaw to control his anger and how to use his abilities to help those in need (Heroic).
However, the teacher was killed by the slavers looking for Blackclaw. Now he is wandering looking for a place to belong and overcome his weaknesses (Arrogant & Illiterate).

Dothan (Allen)
Korindian wanderer and Adept, Dothan has yet to find his place in life. He has taken up the Law of Kor, his own personal (Code of Honor) and will always help those in need (Heroic). He has vowed to protect Life (Pacifist-minor) As an outsider to even his own people, Dothan has been sent as part of an envoy to Mindoth's Tower to share news and support from the Korindian people for the coming war.

The above characters have a lot more to their backgrounds and stories but this is a glimpse of them. Also, I've included a few Edges/Hindrances but not all of them. Just what the other players see/know at the start of the campaign.

So my story is taking place approximately 12 months prior to the Raven's Quest from the main book. My plan is to have three groups total with divergent story lines that over lap and eventually get to the War of Flame in 3121. The above heroes have started as Novice characters (with 10 xp each) and will probably be somewhere around Veteran when Ceynara awakens and starts the War of Flame! Then we will play the Raven's Quest to Legendary. At that point, the campaign will be about a year old or so and we'll see what SPF does with his material. My plan is for the real campaign to take off with three groups of Legendary characters that are central to the fate of all of Shaintar!

Vulcan M134 MiniGun

The GE M134 Vulcan minigun is an aircraft cannon, usually found gracing the door of an assault helicopter or (in slightly different guise) the wing pods of a fighter plane. In popular culture the term "Minigun" has come to refer to any externally powered Gatling gun of rifle caliber, though the term is sometimes used to refer to guns of similar rates of fire and configuration regardless of power source and caliber. Specifically, the term Minigun refers to a single weapon, originally produced by General Electric. The "mini" of the name is in comparison to designs that use a similar firing mechanism but 20 mm or larger shells.

In Hollywood, however, it's more often found tucked nonchalantly under the arm of a very large man, specifically Jesse Ventura in Predator or Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2, and is used by them to make a real mess of somebody's day or, more often, a whole bunch of somebodies... For various reasons it would be completely impossible for even a superhero to use it like that, but it looks marvelous on screen.

These stats are taken from Modern Ops with a few modifications (like being able to carry it) by me.

Quigley Down Under was a fairly good western from 1990 staring Tom Selleck. In the movie he plays Matthew Quigley, an American long distance shooter that heads to Australia to answer a help wanted ad. He used "an experimental weapon with experimental ammo". Here's a quote from the movie describing his 1874 Sharp's Big .50.

“It’s a lever-action, breech loader. Usual barrel length’s thirty inches. This one has an extra four. It’s converted to use a special forty-five caliber, hundred and ten grain metal cartridge, with a five-hundred forty grain paper patch bullet. It’s fitted with double set triggers, and a Vernier sight. It’s marked up to twelve-hundred yards. This one shoots a mite further.

The core rules state that the weapon ranged listed in the gear section are "effective" ranges for the table-top. To get the real world range for a weapon you multiply the brackets by 2 yards and then by 2.5. So the Sharp's Big .50 in the core book (120" max) would have a real world range of 600 yards. About half of what Quigley's rifle could shoot. So here's my version of it:

A few notes about Quigley. I'm sure he would have d12 Shooting and probably the Professional (d12+1) and Expert Edges (d12+2). He'd also have Marksman and Improved Trademark Weapon (Sharp's Big .50). I would allow him to use his +2 bonus from ITW to hit with it in melee combat as well because he does that several times during the movie. He'd also have Rapid Reload which he used frequently through out the movie and Quick Draw which he used in the final scene against Marston. Finally, instead of adjusting the rifle you could use this Edge from Clint Black and just use the normal stats from the core rules for the Sharp's Big .50.

Sharp Shooter
Requirements: Heroic, Marksman, Shooting d10

Your character has an additional Range increment for ranged weapons that is double Long Range. The character cannot move or perform any other actions in the same round he attacks in order to use this Range Increment. In addition, he suffers a -6 Range Modifier penalty to his attack roll.

Savage Gear!

I must admit that I love gear and equipment. That's one of my favorite things to do at character creation. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of "crunchy bits" for the gear in the Savage Worlds rules. So I'm going to stat up a few of my favorites from some movies I've watched recently. Here they are:

Crotch Gun
This piece of gear was first seen in the "guitar case" that the Mariachi in Desperado carried. It wasn't used in the film but the weapon was expanded and saw use in the film From Dusk Till Dawn. The idea came from Rodriguez and Savini (the special fx guy).

Hooligan Mark 1
Created for a vigilante Mariachi by a small firearms shop in northern Mexico. The short barrel and dual revolving cylinders are hidden behind a black codpiece. The assembly is spring activated by a specific motion of the wearer's hips. The assembly is difficult to aim, which accounts for the short ranges.

The crotch gun has 2 chambers of 6 bullets each. It fires in a three round burst and can do so once per round. It takes an action to active and the user makes an opposed Stealth roll versus the targets Notice roll. With a success the shooter gets the Drop on the target. You may only get the Drop once per combat with this weapon.

A Wild Card may spend a Benny to recover d4+1 Power Points. This takes an action as he calls upon his inner reserves. You may not exceed your usual limit.

Golden Age of Heroes

The year is 1940. The Axis powers are searching for fabled artifacts of vast power. If they are able to find them and use them the world is doomed. It's up to a chosen few to stop these evil forces and save the world from certain destruction. Or something like that.

We played a one-shot Friday night (we were missing several players so we didn't play our usual campaign game). I ran the crew through a Golden Age game using the powers from Necessary Evil. They were all Novice with 10 XP and were required to take at least one good guy Hindrance (Code of Honor, Heroic or Loyal). And they were not allowed any of the bad guys Hindrances (Blood Thirsty, Greedy, Heartless, Mean, Vengeful). I like Black and White for my Golden Age heroes!

Everyone had a great time and I even had a couple players tell me it was one of the most fun one shots we've ever done. That always make a GM feel good.

I used Major Maxim (rebased) from the Indyclix game as one of my major bad guys. Of course, he will be a recurring villain for them (if we play again). I wrote him up as a Legendary character with 100 XP (using my modified Rank chart) so I can play him at any level by just taking away level-ups. Here he is:

Rippers: Hydes

The first few times we played Rippers it was apparent that the "bad guys" from the GM's section were underpowered. Especially against 6 Seasoned player characters. So I beefed most of them up. Here is my version of a Hyde. Also, to keep players from just taking "injections" and becoming Hydes themselves, I had my versions have implants of glands that would secrete the formula so they could "Hulk out" for combat but sneak around as normal joes.

Also, it doesn't make much sense that the Hydes from the Rippers book have Improved Nerves of Steel if they aren't Wild Cards. So I made all my Hydes Wild Cards.

I rebased the Heroclix version (left) of Mr Hyde on 1.250" washers that I painted flat black. They look pretty good.

Ranks and Experience

One of the things about Savage Worlds that never made complete sense to me is the Experience Points to Rank table. It's based on 5 point increments (which makes sense) and gives a Ranking based on how many XP a character has accumulated. But the Ranks go every 20 points from zero to eighty. I've often wondered why 80 was the magic number? Especially since percentiles are based on 100. And the Level-Ups are based on 5's. Also, being a former d20 player (mostly D&D and a LotR homebrew) changing the Rankings to 100 xp matches up nicely with the "levels" in 3rd Edition. Every D&D level equals 10 xp in Savage worlds. So a level 10 Fighter for example would be a 100 xp Legend in Savage Worlds using my modified Rank Table.

So I've changed the Rank Table for my campaigns. Here it is:

Homebrew Rules

Every gaming group has their own style of gaming and their own rules they use at the table. Here are some of ours:

Critical Hits
In addition to getting a d6 for a Raise on attack rolls we wanted something to give Wild Cards (both PCs and NPCs) a bit more kick. When both Fighting and Wild Die Ace on an attack roll you double the total damage. This includes the bonus d6 if you hit with a Raise.

Critical Miss
If a Wild Card rolls double one's on an attack roll they may not spend a benny to re-roll. In addition, the GM still gets to "make up something rotten to happen to your character". This only applies to combat. Bennies may still be spent to reroll critically failed Skill attempts.

Critical Miss Benny
If a Wild Card rolls double one's on an attack roll they gain a benny. This helps off-set the "rotten" thing that is about to happen to your character! Remember, this benny cannot be spent to re-roll the miss.

Bennies for XP
The number of bennies in-hand at the end of a play session is the chance on a single d6 to gain one extra experience point. A player with six or more bennies can divide them as desired between two d6 rolls for one XP each. Two rolls is the maximum. (Adapted from Advanced Dungeons and Savages)

Voted Benny
Any player may nominate another player to earn a benny for a witty comment, good roleplaying or any other "in-game" reason. The other players then vote yea or nay. A player may only earn one "voted" benny per play session.

Benny for Re-Shuffling
The GM may give the action deck to the player with the least amount of bennies at the table to reshuffle the deck. They earn a benny. (Adapted from Evil Mike, who adapted it from Clint Black)

This is my first post on my new Savage Worlds Blog. I'll be posting my homebrew rules, ideas and campaigns along with information for my players to this Blog. Currently I am running a Savage Serenity (before the BDM) campaign, 50 Fathoms campaign (just kicked off) and a Rippers campaign. There's lots more to come so stay tuned!
